Sue Currie

A New Zealand born professional artist for five decades, I began as a graphic designer and illustrator in Christchurch then moved to Sydney in 1968 working there until 1974. After some intensive art tuition I then committed to painting as a fine artist, returning to New Zealand to begin painting full-time.

I paint in oils, acrylics and watercolours - the subject dictates which medium I use. Always carrying a camera, I’m on the lookout for colour, light and shapes and ‘moments in time’. These are the greatest influences and the reason I want to paint. In an ever changing world I’m interested in recording the wonderful visual world around me. The recipient of numerous awards, I really appreciate and thank the judges and their comments which has motivated me to go on and keep building on the knowledge and the joy I have gained.

Lately, I have been developing the technique of wet in wet with watercolours. Moving the pigments around while the paper is still wet and as the colours merge with one another they create some interesting effects. I only mix certain colours together so that the painting remains clear and vibrant.

My oils are built up in layers, some of them impasto. These tend to be my more traditional paintings, concentrating on the colours in the shadows and dark areas. This medium is very suited to this.

The advantage of acrylics is that they have a fast drying time. I have been experimenting with these as well and using many bright colours. This has led me into collage again. I produced some paintings from my imagination in Sydney in the 80’s, using my design background. Today, these paintings are moving more into abstraction and I’m having fun with them.

I paint landscapes and seascapes, exhibiting in galleries and art shows mostly in the South Island, as well as Members’ exhibitions at various Art Societies. Many of my paintings have been sold and are in private collections overseas.
